Places of Faith in Casentino
A special tour that will allow us to explore one of Tuscany’s most beautiful and fascinating valleys in the footsteps of famous ascetics, blessed people and saints. The visit takes place over two days.
We will start our tour discovering the Etruscans and their ancient place of worship at Pieve a Socana. We will then move on to the village of Poppi (“one of the most beautiful in Italy”), where we will visit the Abbey of San Fedele and discover the history of the local “Saint”: The Blessed Torello. After lunch, we will head for the Monastery of Camaldoli and learn about the history of the Camaldolese Order and its founder, St Romuald. The visit to the hermitage, which is immersed in the woods of the Parco delle Foreste Casentinesi, will complete the day.
The second day will begin with a visit to the mystical place where St Francis of Assisi received the stigmata in 1224: the Sanctuary of La Verna. We will discover the places that inspired the Poor Man of Assisi and his followers, and admire the splendid Della Robbia glazed terracotta. In the afternoon, we move on to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso, the most important Marian Temple in the valley, and then visit the most beautiful and fascinating Romanesque Church in the Casentino: the Pieve di Romena.
