Casentino: Dante’s valley

This special tour is a real “Full Immersion” for those visitors who want to discover the places of the Casentino region that the Supreme Poet chose to “live” during two fundamental periods of his life.

During the tour there will be readings and commentaries of famous passages of the Divine Comedy inspired by these sites (“The rivulets, that from the verdant hills of Cassentin descend down into Arno”).

We will visit Poppi, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, and in particular the famous Castle of the Conti Guidi, which houses a spectacular miniature reconstruction of the Battle of Campaldino, fought on the plain below the castle, where Dante took part as a Guelph “feditore”(a knight whose task was to start the battle). Then we will admire the most fascinating of the Romanesque churches in the Casentino: the Pieve di Romena, which the great poet undoubtedly admired during his stay in the valley. Not far away is the Castello di Romena; it was here that Dante was so impressed by the “ringed” shape of the internal dungeons that he proposed the same layout for the Inferno of his Comedy. We will therefore admire the Castle of Porciano, talking about the vicissitudes of Master Adam (“O ye, who without any torment are, And why I know not, in the world of woe, He said to us, “behold, and be attentive; Unto the misery of Master Adam “), Count Buonconte di Montefeltro, Fonte Branda, etc. etc.

ENTRANCE FEE (Poppi Castle, Romena Castle, Pieve di Romena): 10 euros per person (lunch not included)

LENGHT OF VISIT: whole day
