Worked Stone
The stone of choice in the Casentino area is “pietra serena“, quartz crystals with clay cement that characterises the Tuscan landscape throughout the world. The village that fits right into this picture is Strada in Casentino. Strolling through the village streets you can visit the ecomuseum of worked stone and you can visit the stonecutter’ workshops, where you can meet young craftsmen, the last representatives of families that have been dedicated to the art of worked stone for generations.
The splendid castles that characterise the current landscape of the Casentino Valley are the expression of the settlement and territorial organisation, methods based on the art of worked stone, with which the lordship of the Guidi counts in Casentino was established between the 11th and 13th centuries.
